Modern motorcycles can come fitted with any one of half a dozen battery types: conventional lead-acid (STD), AGM, GEL, or one of the new generation 12.8V-13.2V LiFePO4 lithium units increasingly fitted as standard. Each variant has different charging and maintenance requirements.
For a single-bike owner that's just about manageable; for a household with two or three bikes, or a rider who likes to change machines regularly, knowing which battery is fitted and which charger to reach for can be a costly conundrum.
The OptiMate 4 Quad Program solves the problem in one. Part of OptiMate's premium Gold Series, it's a fully automatic 9-step, 1.25A charger and maintainer designed to handle every battery type a motorcyclist is likely to encounter.
Charges and maintains everything
The OptiMate 4 Quad Program is suitable for 12V STD, AGM and GEL lead-acid batteries from 4-60Ah, and 12.8V LiFePO4 / LFP lithium batteries from 2-15Ah, the user simply selects the battery type at the push of a button and lets the charger get on with it.
The fully automatic multi-step programme brings the battery safely to full charge, tests its state of health and then switches to long-term maintenance mode: keeping the battery in peak condition 24/7 without overcharging. Used regularly, that maintenance routine extends battery life significantly.
Brings ‘dead’ batteries back
Most chargers give up on a battery that’s dropped below a certain level. The OptiMate 4 Quad Program will diagnose, test and recover a ‘flat’ lead-acid or lithium battery from as low as 0.5V.
For lithium batteries it also resets the internal Battery Management System (BMS) from sleep or deep-discharge protection mode, getting the cells ready to accept charge again.
CAN-bus compatible
The ‘Quad Program’ name comes from its four selectable charging modes — two for lead-acid, two for lithium, with the option in each case to charge directly to the battery or via the bike’s 12V socket.
That means it works straight out of the box with the CAN-bus-controlled DIN sockets on modern BMWs and the Ø12mm sockets on some recent Triumph Tigers.
Owners can buy an optional compact converter cable that plugs into the DIN socket or invest in the OptiMate 4 Quad Program PREMIUM Edition, which comes with everything required to charge through the 12V DIN socket.
Built for connect-and-forget use
Designed to be left unattended for long periods, the 4 Quad Program is fully protected against overcharging, reverse polarity and short-circuits. Sparks are suppressed, and stand-by power draw is less than 0.5W.
The IP54 weatherproof case is rated for use down to -40°C, so it's happy in a garage, a workshop or out on the driveway.
The OptiMate 4 Quad Program retails at £82.90 (inc. VAT) and is covered by a 3-year limited replacement warranty — a fraction of the cost of a replacement lithium battery, and far less than getting through several wrong chargers.
For CAN-bus equipped motorcycles, the OptiMate 4 Quad Program PREMIUM Edition sells for £93.90 and includes the compact converter cable (RRP £20.90 when bought separately).
